人教版高中英语选修11 Unit 1 New Zealand  Reading: New Zealand: Land Of The Long White Cloud    Objectives:  By the end of the class, students will be able to :  1. read the map of New Zealand and infer its main geographic characters like cities, seas, latitude, longitude, highest area, climate etc.  2. identify more geographic information by skimming and marking it on the map. Afterwards,figure out which island may have a larger population based on its geographic features.  3. learn the history of New Zealand, retell it with the help of key words and give a fair evaluation on the influence different settlers made to the land.  4. have a role play to talk about New Zealand from the aspects of geography, history, culture, food etc.  Teaching steps: Step 1: Warming up  1. Greeting: Teacher is disguised as a tour guide from Auckland, New Zealand and welcomes all the Chinese exchange students.  2. Watch a short video about New Zealand, and get the general impression on the country.  3. Read a map of New Zealand to infer more information about it such as nearby seas, main islands, mountains, lowest and highest areas, major cities, possible climate, ...  Step 2: Reading Part 1 (Geography)  1. Scan the passage to understand the main idea and its writing style.  2. Read part 1 carefully, set down a few key words on the map while reading, then give a brief introduction with the help of the map and key words.  3. Think: On which island would you expect there to be more people? Give at least two reasons.  Step 3: Reading Part 2 (History)  1. Scan part 2 and locate 6 different periods of time in New Zealand history.  2. Read part 2 more carefully and figure out different settlers’ behaviours during different periods of time by completing a time line:  in about 1000 AD(Who? What?) → the next 200 years(Who? What?) → in about 1790(Who? What?) → in 1840(Who? What?) → between 1860-1872(Who? What?) → after the New Zealand land wars(Who? What?)    3. Think: Are the changes happened in New Zealand good or bad? What can you learn from those changes?  Step 4: Role Play  1. Give the passage a proper title and explain the reason you choose it:   New Zealand: Land Of _______________________________________________ 2. Role play: Suppose the premier of New Zealand has come to our city! She is meeting you face to face! Work in pairs and have a face-to-face talk (One is a host, the other acts as the premier).  Homework:  1. Read the text aloud and fluently.  2. Surf the internet for more information about New Zealand and write a brief introduction of it including its geography, history, culture ...
